Brushing and Flossing

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that daily brushing begin as soon as your child’s first tooth erupts. All Kids Dental suggests that parents consider caring for infant’s teeth with Tenders®. These infant pre-toothbrushes are mini cloths that fit over your finger and are a comfortable way to introduce your infant to the routine of daily oral hygiene. (Ask the front desk for a sample to try.)

As your infant gets older, use a small, soft bristled brush with a small amount of toothpaste. Do not begin using a fluoride toothpaste until after age two- usually around 30-36 months of age. We recommend that you begin sharing tooth brushing responsibility with your child as a toddler. When teaching children to brush, place the toothbrush at a 45 degree angle along gum line and message the teeth and gum tissue in a gentle messaging motion. To properly brush all surfaces of each tooth it may take up to two minutes. (Ask the front desk for an egg timer that helps children keep track of brushing time). Finish by brushing the tongue, or use a tongue scraper (Ask the front desk for a tongue scraper from our display case) to help freshen breath and remove bacteria.

The doctors at All Kids Dental recommend that parents begin flossing their children’s teeth between age four and five. Specific situations may require flossing at an earlier age. Flossing is important in removing plaque from between the teeth where the toothbrush can’t reach. The research shows that 30-35% of cavities occur between the teeth, particularly the baby molar teeth. All Kids Dental suggest that parents consider using an E-Z Floss Flosser®. These hand-held flossing aids are stronger than pharmacy flossers and much more convenient for parents to properly floss quickly and comfortably. (Ask the front desk for a sample to try). To properly floss, slide the floss between teeth and gently scrape the floss against the side of the teeth in an up and down motion. Remember, the back baby teeth are the most important, they will be present until age eleven or twelve, so spend your time on these teeth first.

Did you know that one-third of parents allow their children to brush their own teeth, unsupervised, beginning at age two? The doctors at All Kids Dental recommend that parents be responsible for cleaning their children’s teeth at least one time per day, preferably at night, until age seven. We know that every child’s skill level is different and together we can help establish a home care protocol that will help your child become a cavity-free adult.
